Chicago Travel Guide

Chicago: Knowing the Destination

Chicago, officially the City of Chicago, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Illinois after Aurora and Naperville, and the third-most-populous city in the United States. The city stands on the Lake Michigan. Chicago was established as a city in 1837.

Chicago has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dfa), with hot, humid summers and cold winters. Chicago summers tend to be hot as the average high temperature touches 85°F (29.4°C) at the peak of July. The winter season starts from November and lasts until February. The breezes from Lake Michigan have a localized cooling effect on the immediate lakefront neighborhoods; dense fog in the city is a common effect of the breeze during the winter.

Things to Do in Chicago

1. Explore Beaches
Chicago is not known as a beach destination, but when it comes to quality-beaches Chicago takes a lead. The Chicago shore has been called the second cleanest urban waterfront in the world. The level of disease -causing pathogens stay low.
Lifeguards are posted (usually in a rowboat) if the beach is officially open. Miles of beaches are within the walking distance of the Red Line, which means you can allow your kids to freely enjoy the beaches. Lake Michigan is the largest freshwater lake that is entirely within the United States, and Chicagoans flock to its sandy shores.
Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach (in the Near North and Lincoln Park) are also popular options to soak in sun.
2.Walk in Ethnic Neighborhoods
Chicago is the cauldron of diversity.  Culture of the immigrants clearly reflect in the neighborhoods. Chicago’s Chinatown is among the most active Chinatowns in the world. It’s on the South Side near Bridgeport. The Southwest Side houses enormous populations of Polish Highlanders and Mexicans, as well as reduced Lithuanian and Bohemian communities. The Far Southwest Side is home to Irish communities. Visit Rogers Park, and you would have a feeling of being in India.  The place has stores of spices, saris, and venues for the latest Bollywood flicks. The intersection of Argyle and Broadway in Uptown has immigrant population comprising Vietnamese, Thais, and Laotians. Restaurants, grocery stores, and everything found there are abundant in items consumed by them.
3. Take a Stroll at Navy Pier
A visit to Chicago is incomplete without a close encounter with the history of Navy Pier. Navy Pier was built in 1914 and served as a naval base during both world wars. It is now Illinois’ number one most visited tourist attraction. Families with kids love the carnival rides, including the popular ferris wheel, as well as theater, restaurants, arcades, bars, shops, and most importantly great views back towards the city.
4. Experience Events & Festivals
Finding a month without event or festival in Chicago is a near challenge. In the Loop, Grant Park hosts Taste of Chicago in July, and four major music festivals: Blues Fest and Gospel Fest in June, Lollapalooza in August, and Jazz Fest over Labor Day Weekend. All but Lollapalooza are free. If you are a big music fan, you must have heard of Pitchfork Media. Most of the musical performances including three-day festival of rock, rap and more are held in summer.
