If you are looking for pure eco-tourism, Beluga is the place to be. Beluga is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kenai Peninsula Borough, Alaska, United States. The destination derives its name from Beluga Whale found in the Beluga River flowing in the northern part of CDP. Cheapfaremart booking engine allows you to search Beluga flights, compare airfares, and book cheap airline tickets.

What is a Beluga Whale? It is a white (as adults) toothed whale measuring 12 feet. The mammal travels in groups. This is the only whale that can move its neck, which makes it easy to hunt its food in the muddy or ice-covered environment. The presence of a blubber layer, which can be as much as 5 inches (12 cm) thick differentiates it further from its close species like porpoises and dolphins and it gives them endurance against the winter extremes of Alaska.

Things to do in Beluga

Fishing

Beluga and its nearby attraction – Homer - are known as the fishing capital of the world. There are over fifty charter operators in the area to help visitors enjoy deep-sea fishing. If you love watching people doing amazing things, keep your fingers crossed. Observe commercial fishing boats offloading halibut, salmon, cod, rockfish, and even crab. However, you need a license before fishing for salmon, halibut, or steelhead.

Wildlife and adventure tourism

Beluga and its nearby places including the Spit, Old Town, and Beluga Slough are paradise for birdwatchers. Be ready to capture the shorebirds or seabirds in your camera. The Calvin and Coyle trails just east of town and the end of FAA road (the airport road) have observation platforms to view wildlife in the wetlands, often browsed by moose.

For those looking for a bit more adventure there are numerous kayak guides, whale-watching boats, and so forth with offices on the Spit and at the various floatplane docks on Beluga Lake.

Winter sports

Beluga has a Subarctic climate which means severe winter and loads of snow. The climate is challenging for many but adventurers take pleasure in winter sports from October through January till March. Hiking, ice racing, and skiing are popular amusement activities. December is the month with the highest snowfall. Get access to an excellent network of ski and snowshoe trails. The Baycrest Winter Trail System (24.2 km) is the most popular one that you can access via the dump on the Sterling Highway. When the ice is thick on Beluga Lake the focus shifts to the Spit.
